Information on DM Technical Services, its business and strategy
Background and principal activity
DMTSL is a privately owned investment holding company which was incorporated in England and Wales on 17 November 2005 and established specifically for the purpose of acquiring Dowding & Mills. Incorporated in 1919 to purchase the business carried on by William Dowding and Harry Mills, D&M has a well established brand name and track record in the provision of high quality maintenance and repair services, particularly on an emergency rapid turnaround basis. D&M is a large independent provider of electro-mechanical maintenance and repair services with 27 separate businesses in the UK encompassing: power generator and electric motor repair; mechanical repair; mechanical and electrical site work; condition monitoring services; and electronic and calibration services. In addition to its UK operations, headquartered in Birmingham, D&M has a subsidiary in the USA operating from facilities in Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming, and subsidiaries in Australia operating from facilities in Brisbane, Newcastle, Melbourne and Sydney.
Under the direction of its Executive Chairman, Tudor Davies, appointed on 29 November 2002, the D&M Group has undergone a major reorganisation resulting in a significant improvement in profitability and cash generation.
Business model and strategy
Following its successful reorganisation, the Dowding & Mills Group is now well placed to pursue its strategy of growing its business both organically, by marketing more proactively its current and new services to its key target sectors/customers, and via complementary acquisitions where opportunities present themselves to create value for its shareholders. It aims to develop its business in the Middle East and the Far East as well as each of the three continents in which it currently has facilities (namely, Europe, Australasia and North America). Dowding & Mills’ business model primarily involves offering high quality service levels from an experienced workforce with the appropriate skill set. The D&M Group’s extensive localised branch network, run as individual operating units, enables it to undertake client assignments throughout the world, and its wide coverage area and rapid deployment is a key selling point. All branches report to head office and are supported by centralised accounting, payroll, information technology and human resource functions, thereby enabling local management to focus on the commercial development of their business units.
